The Application Process

Due to the current economic conditions, The Kettering Fund is not accepting letters of inquiry until further notice. Potential applicants are encouraged to contact the Executive Director to determine if their projects fall within the interest of the Fund for future consideration.

There are three steps to applying for a grant from The Kettering Fund: 1) a discussion with the Executive Director about your project, 2) a letter of inquiry, 3) and a full proposal.

1. Discussion with Executive Director
Contact Judith M. Thompson, the Executive Director, by phone (937-228-1021) or email to determine if your project falls within the interests of The Kettering Fund.

2. Letter of Inquiry
If it is determined that your project is appropriate for further consideration, a letter of inquiry form will be transmitted to you with a stated deadline for submission. Or, you may create your own format, but it is required that the information be presented in the order as outlined below, using a typeface no smaller than 12 points, and on one page only.

• Organization name, address, phone and fax numbers, and email and website addresses
• Contact name, title, phone and email address
• Project title and duration of project
• Amount requested, the total project budget and the total agency budget
• Project description - who, what, when, where, why and how
• Printed name and signature of chief executive officer, and date signed

Required Attachments: 1) If your organization is not a previous Kettering Fund grantee, you must submit a copy of the IRS letter confirming 501 (c)(3) status, or evidence that your organization is either a unit of government or associated with a religious organization, 2) a list of current board members, 3) and one copy only of an informational brochure and/or annual report. (Do not staple attachments to the letter of inquiry.)

3. Full Proposal
If your organization is selected to submit a full proposal, application guidelines will be sent to you by mail, or preferable, by email. Staff reviews all proposals for completeness and may seek additional information either by phone or in person, whichever is appropriate.

Applicants will be advised within two weeks of the Distribution Committee meeting as to whether or not they have been funded. All grantees are required to sign a grant agreement, which includes reporting requirements. Funds are then made available on a mutually agreed upon schedule.
